For those of you who do not want to do their own photography that is a service I offer. If you need digital jury slides, a poster, or photography for publication I can help you and give you images to your specifications. Call or e-mail me for a price list and we will talk about your project.
Jim – Your photographic work is great. I just bought & downloaded your excellent video on photographing jewelry and am acquiring all the materials you mentioned. However, I’m puzzled about the “plastic diffusion material” you put into the wooden frame and didn’t find it in the equipment list. Can you be more specific about who makes this stuff and what it’s called? Thanks!
The plastic diffusion material is called Dura Lar. It comes in rolls and sheets and if you do a Google search you will get lots of information. You want to get the matte variety. My local art supply store has it on a roll and I just get a couple feet and trim it out. You can also use white silkscreen fabric or if you can find white translucent plexiglass that will work also, just bear in mind that different materials affect the quality of the light slightly and you need to experiment. There’s nothing right or wrong here, the end result is the only thing that’s important.
Hi Jim. I have both your DVDs, and very much appreciate you sharing your experience and all your tips. I have searched for many years for tips to assist with my jewellery photography: it’s fantastic to find this kind of methodical, illustrative and easy to follow approach. Love it.
I have a small query:can tinted glass tiles be substituted for the dark plexiglass?
Thanks Jim
Ruth
Ruth,
Plexiglass or glass on black velvet is what is commonly used for jury slides so that is what I talked about but you can certainly use something else. The glass tiles sound interesting and I would certainly try them.
Hi
Jim, I make jewelry and I paint and I am looking into purchasing a really good camera so that I can take really good photo’s of my jewelry but I also want to take really nice shots of flowers and trees that I can enlarge and frame and or paint with detail. What camera would you suggest for this purpose? I am so confused and I don’t want to buy a camera that does not take good clear photo’s. Thanks!!
Merle
Hopefully I will be able to answer your question later today, I have been planning on posting on this particular issue so your question was timely.
I am in the process of purchasing the setup you have shown for the diffuser screen. I will buy all the components from Adorama. So far in my wish list is:
Adorama Pro Clamp with Reversible Mounting Stud
Manfrotto 175 Clip Clamp (#2936)
Manfrotto 244N Variable Friction Arm
Do I still need anything else to make this work? Like a couple ball joints?
